As long as your friends all fit in a light party (2 dps, 1 tank, 1 healer) then you'll be able to do these dungeons and skip all the queues for even faster levelling. If you're more than that or don't fit into a light party, then there are a few options once you hit level 50. Trial roulettes use the full party makeup of 2 tanks, 2 healers, 4 dps.

You can't have done it completely solo in the first weeks of the game because there's a gate which used to require 2 people to open - one standing on a button on each side. But as other people said it was re-worked a few years ago to be completely soloable.

You can't join a player who is inside an instance. What you have to do is both be standing on same map outside, then one enters and the other gets a popup to join him. But sometimes even that gets thrown a wobbly by a connection thingy.
